Northern Uganda gets C-Care healthcare boost
By Priscilla Najjuma
GULU – C-Care, Uganda’s has inaugurated its new C-Care Hospital Gulu, marking a transformative shift in medical accessibility for Northern Uganda. This landmark expansion brings specialised medical services directly to the Acholi, Lango, and West Nile sub-regions, communities that have historically travelled hundreds of kilometres to Kampala for essential procedures.
The launch marks a milestone in C-Care’s 30th year of operations, bridging the healthcare gap by
establishing a permanent, high-tech presence in Gulu, while offering advanced diagnostics, emergency services, and specialist consultations to a region that has long faced a deficit in private specialist care.
C-Care Uganda has evolved into a connected health system comprising 20 clinics nationwide, with the Gulu Hospital standing as one of the most significant realisations of this vision to date. While Northern Uganda represents a substantial portion of the national population, the region’s medical infrastructure has traditionally lagged behind the capital. C-Care Uganda’s full-service facility seeks to correct this imbalance.
Andrew Mugalu, General Manager of C-Care IMC, while speaking at the launch on Thursday 14th, May 2026, emphasised the practical impact of the new facility.
“Our doctors can now practice evidence-based medicine with total confidence, supported by on-site imaging and diagnostics that significantly improve patient outcomes. C Care Hospital Gulu marks the end of an era where patients in the north had to choose between delayed care or an exhausting journey south. That choice should never have existed; today, we are making sure it no longer does,” he said.
The opening has been met with enthusiasm from local leaders and health advocates. A well-resourced private hospital provides a critical safety net in a region where public facilities are often overextended.
Gulu Hospital is equipped with advanced Diagnostics like an on-site CT imaging and digital X-rays which previously required Kampala referrals, specialised staff that include resident radiologists, technologists, and emergency specialists, and integrated care in seamless transitions between outpatient, emergency, and inpatient departments.
Guest of Honour, Helene Echevin, CEO C-Care International while at the event, noted, “Our investment in Gulu reflects our belief that geography should never dictate the quality of healthcare a person receives.
Gulu City deserves a facility capable of providing definitive treatment and sophisticated diagnostics on- site, moving beyond mere stabilization for transport. By elevating C-Care IMC Gulu to a full-scale
hospital, we are establishing a permanent cornerstone for clinical excellence that will serve Northern
Uganda for decades to come.”
C-Care Hospital Gulu has already confirmed plans for an immediate expansion, which will include 55
additional inpatient beds, a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a dedicated mother and child centre, accident and emergency. As of 2026, the healthcare map of Uganda has officially changed. For the people of Northern Uganda, world-class medical care is no longer a journey away, it is home.
