KAMPALA – Uganda Police Force has assured the public of peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations. The reassurance comes as the country faces terror threats from the Allied Democratic Forces ruminants.
Representing Chief Political Commissar, Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) Hadijah Namutebi assured the public of security during festive season during a one-day community service activity December 22nd, 2023.
She was part of security personnel and the civilians during the community policing walk across the Central Business District of Kampala. SCP Namutebi urged Ugandans to be extra cautious about terrorism threats and domestic violence, and appealed to the public to abide by the traffic guidelines, since this is the busiest time of the year.
She said Police and the sister security agencies are working hand-in-hand to ensure security is at its peak this festive holiday.
In September the United States urged its citizens to reconsider travelling to Uganda after the terror alerts were issued by the latter’s security agencies.
In a brief statement, the US Embassy in Kampala told its citizens in Uganda to remain alert and avoid large public gatherings.
“We are following press reports and police statements of an improvised explosive device (IED) discovered at a Kampala-area church in the Rubaga Division on September 3 which police located and defused along with unconfirmed reports of potential additional devices,” the statement read.
“We remind you that the US Department of State’s travel advisory for Uganda is at a Level 3 (reconsider travel) for terrorism. There remains a threat of terrorist attacks in Uganda and throughout the region. As anyone can be a victim, US citizens should remain alert and avoid large public gatherings,” it added.
Uganda Police Force later revealed that they had arrested a suicide bomber as the suspect attempted to enter Miracle Centre Cathedral in Rubaga Division, Kampala City.
In 2011, terrorists bombed Kampala killing 74 people watching the world cup finals.
