Museveni calls for marketable courses

ENTEBBE – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met and held discussions with H.E Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Chancellor of Cavendish University and former President of Nigeria.
During the meeting held at State House Entebbe on Friday 9th August 2024, President Museveni stressed the need for teaching courses that have a broad market base as this will quickly solve the problem of unemployment in Uganda and Africa as a whole. He added that once a university offers quality education, the number of students will increase at the institution.
On his part, Dr. Jonathan thanked President Museveni for the peace and stability in Uganda, adding that he has been in Uganda several times, but it is always peaceful, unlike some other African countries.
He also highlighted the tremendous increase in students’ admission into Cavendish University-Uganda. He explained that Cavendish University has the most international students admitted to universities in Uganda.
Meanwhile, the university has bid farewell to its Vice Chancellor, Prof. John F. Mugisha, following the successful completion of his second term in office.
”After eight years of transformative leadership, Prof. Mugisha would embark on a new chapter in his illustrious career, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, innovation, and unwavering commitment to higher education,” reads a press statement.
It further reads, “During his tenure, Prof. Mugisha was the driving force behind Cavendish University’s ascent to prominence as a centre of academic excellence in the region. His visionary leadership and steadfast dedication propelled the university to new heights, solidifying its reputation as a beacon of student-centered, technology-enabled, and transformative higher education.”
It adds, “Under Prof. Mugisha’s guidance, the university witnessed a remarkable expansion of its academic programmes catering to the diverse needs of students from all backgrounds. His commitment to widening access to higher education has been particularly noteworthy, as he has championed the provision of scholarships to students from disadvantaged communities, ensuring that the transformative power of education reaches those who need it most.”
Prof. Mugisha is commended for his passion for academic research and innovation has been a hallmark of his tenure.
“He has fostered a culture of intellectual curiosity and exploration, encouraging faculty and students alike to push the boundaries of knowledge and contribute to the advancement of their respective fields. His deep engagement with higher education stakeholders, such as the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Uganda Vice Chancellors’ Forum, Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), and East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTCO), has further solidified Cavendish University’s position as a leader in the realm of higher education.”
In the interim, the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Olive Sabiiti, will assume the role of Vice Chancellor, ensuring a seamless transition until a permanent successor is announced.
“Dr. Sabiiti, a close collaborator of Prof. Mugisha, is poised to build upon the strong foundation laid by her predecessor and continue the university’s trajectory of excellence,” it reads.
“As Prof. Mugisha departs, the university community wishes him utmost success and extends its heartfelt gratitude for his exceptional leadership and resolute commitment to the institution’s growth and success. His dedication to student empowerment, entrepreneurship, and ethical conduct has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals who have passed through the halls of Cavendish University, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of students and educators to come,” said Dr Olive Sabiiti, Actting Vice-Chancellor.
