Uganda Police Force has warned unlicensed vehicles not to transport passengers an act that contravenes the Road and Safety Act 1998. In a message posted on @PoliceUg, the Uganda Police X-handle (former twitter), Mr Michael Kananura, the spokesperson, traffic at Uganda Police called upon members of the public to report all traffic violations on the toll free line 0800199099.
“The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety warns all motor vehicles carrying passengers, without Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licenses to stop with immediate effect. In line with the above, the directorate has intensified its operations on the same. At least ten drones, ten school costas and two school buses have been impounded and drivers have been arrested. Our officers shall continue operations against reckless drivers, in a bid to secure the festive seasons,” the twit reads.
Unlicensed vehicles are prone to accidents since they are not inspected and certified by the Ministry of Works and Transport for passenger transport service.
Adding, “We thank all those who have reported to us through our social media platforms.”
According to the 2022 Uganda Police Force (UPF) annual report, the country registered 20, 394 cases of road accidents in 2022 compared to 17,443 registered the previous year. Out of every 100 crashes, 22 people died while 61 percent of all accidents were a result of reckless driving.
