Police records 55 deaths during Christmas

KAMPALA – The Christmas period in Uganda was largely peaceful, with the country experiencing a significant reduction in crime rates compared to the previous year. According to the police report, a total of 91 incidents were reported this year, down from 110 incidents in 2023, representing a 19% decrease.
While the overall security situation was calm, there were some isolated incidents of criminality that resulted in the loss of 55 lives. The causes of death varied, with 12 victims being assaulted to death, 3 hacked to death, and 2 drowning. Other causes of death included lynching, blunt object trauma, stabbing, suicide, strangulation, suspected sudden death, rash and negligent acts, suspected food poisoning, suspected arson, and suspected murder.
The police were able to arrest 16 suspects in connection with these incidents, and the cases are currently at different stages of investigation. The Uganda Police Force has commended the joint security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and security during the festive season.
“We are pleased to report that the Christmas period was largely peaceful, with a significant reduction in crime rates compared to last year,” said ACP Kituuma, the Police Spokesperson.
“We attribute this success to the tireless efforts of our officers and the cooperation of the public. We urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.”
