Two Karamojon killed in UPDF Operation

ABIM – Two Karamojong Jie warriors have been killed by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) in an operation in Kailong Dam, Chamokok Sub County, Abim District.
In a statement issued Sunday, August 111th, 2024, the operation, carried out by UPDF’ the 85 Battalion, 507 Brigade, under the 5 Infantry Division, led to the recovery of stolen items.
The recovered items include:
- An AK-47 sub-machine gun (serial number 19522) with three rounds of ammunition
- A pair of UPDF digital uniforms
- Gun oil
- A bull seized by the warriors
“The UPDF troops ambushed a group of five Jie warriors who had stolen the bull from Agonga Village, Alekele Sub County, Abim District, resulting in the killing of two warriors. The UPDF appreciates the collaborative efforts of local leadership in maintaining security within the sub-region,” it reads.
Livestock raiding has a long history in Karamoja. Traditionally driven by interethnic competition over land and livestock, raiding was an important component of an agro-pastoral economy that relied on resourcefulness and adaptability to survive the region’s harsh and arid climate.
