KAMPALA – Uganda Airlines has suspended all flights to Kinshasa with immediate effect, citing the deteriorating security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The airline attributed the decision to ongoing fighting in the region.
“Flights will remain suspended until the situation warrants normal operations,” Uganda Airlines stated in a press release dated January 28, 2025.
The suspension comes as the M23 rebel group intensifies its activities in eastern DRC, particularly around Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
M23 fighters have taken control of strategic territories, surrounding Goma and increasing tensions with Congolese government forces.
The rebels have also issued a warning to United Nations peacekeepers (MONUSCO) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) forces, accusing them of siding with the Kinshasa government
Security concerns in Kinshasa have also risen, with violent protests leading to the looting and burning of the Ugandan Embassy.
The unrest follows the M23’s capture of key areas, fuelling fears of further instability
The M23 rebels claim they are fighting to “liberate” Goma and have accused the Congolese government of collaborating with armed groups.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are underway, with regional leaders seeking to de-escalate the situation.
As the crisis deepens, the international community remains on high alert, concerned about the humanitarian impact on civilians.
Uganda Airlines has not specified when flights will resume, citing the need for improved security before restarting operations.
