AGAGO – On Seven accounts, Private Ameny Bonny aged 32 years, a soldier of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has been sentenced to death by the Fifth Infantry Division Field Court Martial for the murder of residents in Paimol, Agago district.
He was charged on three accounts of murder, two accounts of attempted murder, one account of abduction and one account of absent without official leave.
The court, chaired by Colonel Peter Musherere, handed down the sentence Wednesday, November 20th 20234 following a two-day hearing that was held in Ngora East Village, Paimol sub-county in Agago District.
The court heard that on October 20, 2024, Private Ameny deserted his post at Pakondong Detach and went to Ngora East Village in search of his wife, Ogom Betty, whom he suspected of infidelity. Armed and in an agitated state, he fatally shot three people and injured two others, including a one-year-old child. He abducted a resident, Obita Richard, forcing him at gunpoint to reveal the location of his wife and her alleged lover.
During the trial, Ameny pleaded guilty to all charges, citing frustration over his wife’s disappearance with Shs16.5 million he had loaned her to start a business. He claimed repeated attempts to seek help from her family and the police were unsuccessful, pushing him to take matters into his own hands.
The Prosecutor, Lt Nekemiya Waiswa, emphasised the gravity of Ameny’s crimes, describing him as an adult of sound mind who committed premeditated acts that devastated families and communities.
The defence counsel, Pte Agaba Darius, argued for leniency, highlighting Ameny’s previously clean record, his role as a breadwinner for his three children and siblings, and his remorseful cooperation during the trial.
Colonel David Opeero, the Deputy Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, commended the community for their role in the investigation and reaffirmed UPDF’s commitment to justice and accountability.
He urged soldiers to resolve personal disputes through proper channels and avoid conflict with civilians.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has extended financial assistance to the families affected.
The CDF through Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the Deputy CDF, handed over Shs5 million to each family of the deceased and Shs3 million to those injured. “We are deeply sorry for what happened,” Lt Gen Okiding said, offering an apology on behalf of the UPDF. He reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to support the victims and ensure accountability.
Lt Gen Okiding also encouraged local parents to prioritise education, stating, “To compete in Uganda, one must have education,” and urged them to utilise government schemes like the Parish Development Model to tackle poverty, with a focus on agricultural initiatives.
Brig Gen Keith Katungi, Commander 5 Infantry Division, praised the community’s cooperation in maintaining peace, particularly in combating cattle raids. However, he highlighted the urgent need to address poverty and hunger in the region.
Agago District Chairperson, Mr Opio Leonard, expressed gratitude to the UPDF for its accountability, saying, “From covering burial expenses to fulfilling their financial pledge and offering an apology, this is a rare and commendable gesture.”
The victims of the shooting were identified as Akidi Santino (47), Apiyo Sunday (21), and Ajal Florence (16).
