UPDF urged to be vigilant of Al-Shabaab threat

MOGADISHU – Uganda Peoples Defence Forces serving under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) in Somalia have been urged to observe high discipline, respect and vigilance.
Addressing a commander’s update briefing, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, Commander, UNGU-XI, also warned against underestimating the enduring threat posed by the extremist group Al-Shabaab.

“We cannot be in this mission alone as commanders without troops. We need them, and they need us. We must respect them, value their feelings, and recognise the dignity of every soldier, regardless of their background,” he said.
Addressing a commander’s update briefing at the UNGU-XI headquarters in Mogadishu Friday July 25th 2025, Lt Col Barigye emphasized the foundational role of ethical and empathetic leadership in mission success.
He said despite the current calm in enemy activity around Mogadishu, he cautioned the danger remains.
“We must remain vigilant and adaptable. The calm should not mislead us into complacency,” he said.
He commended the officers for their continued efforts in maintaining administrative cohesion and aligning troops with the mission’s strategic objectives.
Lt Col Barigye commander and called for sustained preparedness and discipline in order to effectively counter any emerging threats.
The briefing was attended by officers and department heads serving under the UNGU-XI in Somalia.
