Uganda Kenya new border posts survey start

BUSIA – Road survey for the new proposed border points connecting Kenya to Uganda are scheduled to start soon. According to Julius Maganda Wandera, Uganda’ Minister of State for Works and Transport, the new infrastructures are to ease congestion at crossing points and reduce traffic blockage on major highways.
The two countries signed a memorandum in 2023 to undertake the construction of dual-carriage roads along the Northern Corridor route at Busia and Malaba borders.
Two more crossing points in Mulwanda, Kenya and in Lumino Uganda and Buteba in Buteba sub-county in Busia is to also proposed to divert traffic from Malaba and Busia. After construction of the boarder point a truck is expected to be cleared within 15 minutes currently that end up waiting in a line for more than six hours.
The two governments are under constant pressure by traders and transporters to find solutions to the delays at the border points.
Busia and Malaba are the busiest crossing points for transit trucks to DR Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan and Burundi. The two border posts are estimated to be clearing 3,000 trucks daily.
“Road survey for the new roads and the bridges connecting Uganda with Kenya vie Lumino and Mulwanda respectively starts very soon. Do not chase away people when they make land measurements near your kitchen if your home is near the road,” he said without give the exert date.
Maganda revealed the new development at the funeral of the late Bildad Ojiambo Nabonwe, a retired prominent teacher born on 6th, December 1954 and died on 19th, August, 2026 at Mulago Hospital.
A 2017 World Bank study indicated that traffic jams cost Uganda more than US$800 million in gross domestic product.
According to Shippers Council of Easter Africa Logistics Performance Survey, transport costs stand at US$1.8 per km per container, against world’s best practices of $1 per kilometre, per container.
The late Bildad Ojiambo Nabonwe’ body was buried on Sunday 30th August, 2026 in Bunyidye, Buhehe Sub County, Busia district.
Maganda described the late as a great teacher that mentored many in Uganda.
“We have lost a great person who has touched lives of many people, may his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Wilber Lwagula, the Family Head, also described the late as an encyclopedia, a reference book or digital resource that contains information on many different subjects.
The late taught at Busia Senior Secondary School from 1981 – 1983, Lumino High School from 1984 to 1992, Masaba College, Busia from 1997 to 2008 and before retiring he served at Lwagula Memorial Secondary School from 2025 to 2016.
He had nine children, 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Among the mourners were several politicians, relatives and friends.
