The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has flagged off Battle Group XLVII (BG 47) for deployment to Somalia, marking the latest rotation of Ugandan troops under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The troops were cleared for deployment after completing months of pre-deployment training at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSOTC) in Singo, Nakaseke District, with commanders declaring them ready for peace support operations.
Presiding over the flag-off on behalf of Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, UPDF 1 Division Commander Brigadier General Fred Mwesigye urged the soldiers to uphold discipline, teamwork and professionalism while on mission.
“You are going on a mission, not for leisure. Remain focused, work as a team, and adhere strictly to the guidance of your commanders,” Brig Gen Mwesigye said.
He warned against misconduct, including alcohol abuse and negligence on duty, saying such behaviour could jeopardise both personal safety and the reputation of the force. He also stressed the need for mutual respect among troops, including female personnel, and adherence to high moral standards.
“The eyes of the country are on you. Go and perform your duties professionally and return safely,” he added.
IPSOTC Commandant Colonel Moses Nabaasa said the troops had undergone rigorous preparation since November, covering physical, mental and operational readiness for deployment.
“The overall preparedness of the Battle Group stands at 95 per cent, which is a strong testament to the commitment and resilience of both the trainees and instructors,” Col Nabaasa said.
He reminded the troops of their responsibility as representatives of Uganda on the international stage.
“You are going as one Battle Group — united in purpose and bound by duty. Be good ambassadors of Uganda and uphold the values of the UPDF,” he said.
Battle Group XLVII Commander Colonel Wilson Barigye expressed confidence in the unit’s readiness, crediting instructors for equipping the troops with the necessary skills.
“The success of our mission will reflect the quality of the training we have received,” Col Barigye said, adding that the unit was committed to executing its mandate with professionalism and discipline.
Local leaders also welcomed the deployment, with Kakoola North LC1 Chairperson Doreen Ayebare commending the UPDF for maintaining strong ties with surrounding communities and responding to local security concerns.
Battle Group XLVII will join other Ugandan contingents operating in Somalia, where they are tasked with supporting stabilisation efforts, securing key areas and contributing to long-term peace-building initiatives under the AUSSOM framework.
